Bounty Farm

Our growing practices reflect our values. We believe in taking care of our earth in the same way we take care of ourselves and our neighbors.

There is nothing more important to us than knowing we produce healthful products for our customers and for ourselves. We welcome all questions and are happy to discuss details of our farm culture with our customers.

We are proud to have developed the knowledge and skills to grow all of our vegetables and flowers using organic methods. Although we are not "certified organic," we are nonetheless focused on the health and vibrancy of the soil itself and have no need for synthetic fertilizers on the farm. We know that it is only in healthy soils that healthy plants can thrive, so we feed the soil which ultimately feeds the plants.

We produce healthy products at Bounty Farm by supporting the myriad of organisms that occupy the soil, through the addition of compost produced on-site from materials that include animal manure, wood shavings, hay and grass clippings, feathers and offal, kelp, worm castings, and spent brewery grains. We test our soils annually to keep tabs on where additional organic amendments might be helpful, and add ground limestone on occasion when pH adjustment is recommended by soil tests.

We utilize a nearly no-till approach that means minimal soil disturbance between crops, with the exception of our tulips; these bulbs are planted densely in excavated trenches, and our carrot crop follows immediately on their heels and benefit from the deep, loose bed that remains. We never use herbicides of any kind, and remove weeds by hand, by using ground cover materials such as landscape cloth, and by burning with propane.

We are fortunate to have minimal pest issues, primarily consisting of slugs. Occasionally we see pests such as aphids on our plants, and these are controlled as needed using an OMRI-approved pyrethrum-based spray listed under the trade name Evergreen.
